The wind howled, yet the sailors pressed on. The sailors of Kauai Sailing Association competed in the inaugural “All Hands on Deck!” dingy regatta on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Nawiliwili Bay. There were more than 40 entries. Boats sailed included:

The sailors of Kauai Sailing Association competed in the inaugural “All Hands on Deck!” dingy regatta on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Nawiliwili Bay.
There were more than 40 entries. Boats sailed included: Toppers, 420’s, and Lasers. The competitors ranged in age from youth to adult — the youngest competitor being 10 years old. Many of the youth who sailed in the regatta participated in the Summer Sailing Camps held by KSA.
Highlights of the day included a doughnut race where the sailors steered the boat in as many tiny circles as they could in one minute, tacking and gybing to make the maneuver possible.
The topper race was another highlight of the day. Young and old took to the water and sailed against one another for first place. The topper race was sponsored by Topper International.
There was also another race called the “huli and right race” where sailors tipped over their boat and righted it as many times as possible in one minute.

Huli and Right Race: tied 1st Aliana Ho, Evan Young, Mark Brewer, 2nd Lily Briones, 3rd Mike Baily.
Topper: 1st Mike Baily, 2nd Jim Saylor, 3rd Risa Whetsel.
Perpetual Topper trophy: Risa Whetsel (youth) Mike Baily (Adult).
Laser Youth: tied 1st Brianna Ryan and Tim Blume, 2nd Evan Young, 3rd Aliana Ho.
Laser Adult: 1st Kevin Arnt, 2nd Mike Baily, 3rd Mark Brewer.
420: tied 1st Adrian Bertsch and Mark Brewer 2nd Risa Whetsel, 3rd Brianna Ryan.
