Hurricane Guillermo is wandering out in the Pacific Ocean with a possible eye on Hawaii.
According to the National Weather Service, the effects of the storm could start impacting the Hawaiian Islands by Wednesday.
A citizen community group from Hanapepe-Eleele invites the public to a free special panel on disaster preparedness and response on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hanapepe Public Library Meeting Room.
“In order to know what is going on, and how to take action for yourself, your family and the community, we all need to be involved,” said Susan Remoaldo of Eleele. “Attending a presentation like this is important.”
A panel of experts will be available to help residents and communities increase their preparations for a variety of disasters and to explain the responses citizens and businesses can expect in the aftermath of a disaster.
The presenters will be an expanded lineup of an earlier workshop conducted in Lihue, and a number of informational handouts will be available.
Chris Benchley is the NOAA Warning Coordination meteorologist from the NOAA Central Pacific Hurricane Center based on Oahu and will have information on hurricanes and the El Nino outlook.
Shelly Kunishige is the public information officer from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency based on Oahu who will have information on awareness, preparedness, and the state response.
Joel Frenzel, manager of Simpson Strong-tie of Oahu will have information on home retrofits, continuous load path, hurricane clips, storm panel screws, windows and hurricane rooms.
Padraic Gallagher is the Kauai County Director of the American Red Cross and will have information on preparedness, evacuation and sheltering.
Tad Miura, a representative of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service/Kauai Amateur Radio will have information on ham radio communications.
John Cornell of the Kauai Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team will provide KFD and CERT responses.
Elton Ushio and Chelsie Sakai of the Kauai Civil Defense will have information on tsunami and emergency notifications, flood and tsunami maps showing evacuation areas, and disaster response.
Tuesday’s program is being sponsored by the Hanapepe Public Library and the residents of Hanapepe and Eleele who are organizing to form a new community association for the area.
The event is free and open to the public.
Other topics scheduled to be addressed during the month of August include the county’s South Kauai Development Plan, and the Americans with Disabilities Act information as it relates to pathways and bridges.
