He cradled his helmet — which was gigantic in relation to his small body — as he watched his dad Chris Calio adjust the passenger seat atop his motorcycle.
As the elder Calio explained, “I (usually) take him out around the block. Today, I’m closing the poker stops. This is not just going around the block.”
More than 50 motorcycle enthusiasts turned out Sunday for the 3rd annual Bikers Bridges and BBQ Poker Run which started out from the Rob’s Goodtime Grill in the Rice Shopping Center.
Games and prizes filled the afternoon with proceeds benefiting Life’s Bridges Kauai.
“I heard about this run through the Kauai Harley-Davidson and thought this is something I could do,” said Jeff Corona, sales manager at the Aloha Kia Kauai. “It’s for a good cause.”
Bikers headed east with stops at Kintaro’s near the Kinipopo Shopping Village, the bus stop at the Kilauea Menehune Mart, and at Hanalei Elementary School to pick up their poker hands, completing the draw on return to Rob’s where they were greeted with a hearty BBQ lunch featuring ribs and baked beans.
Larry Feinstein said the ride was an opportunity to become familiar with a new bike, similar to one he’ll be using shortly on a Mainland tour.
“You have to be big to ride a bike like this,” Feinstein said. “But I got some help from Kauai Harley-Davidson so I can learn on this big bike. When I go on my Mainland ride, I’ve got to post to my blog and do call-ins to the radio station.”
The event was sponsored by Rob’s Goodtime Grill and the Payton Bryan Chung Memorial.
Life’s Bridges is a volunteer-based organization on Kauai which provide immediate, short-term bereavement services for those whose family members suddenly pass away.
Gina Kaulukukui, one of the Life’s Bridges members, is the chair for the Prevent Suicide Kauai Task Force and is the former chair of the statewide Prevent Suicide Hawaii Task Force.
