KOLOA – A single-car crash on Koloa Road Tuesday night resulted in injuries and a road closure.
A Toyota SUV was traveling west on Koloa Road around 6:20 p.m., past Saint Raphael Cemetery, when the driver apparently lost control, according to a preliminary investigation. The vehicle reportedly crossed the center line before flipping over and landing on the driver’s side, the Kauai County Police Department said in a press release.
The 36-year-old driver of the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and was found lying unconscious on the roadway with multiple injuries. He was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he remains in stable condition.
Bystanders located the driver’s 4-your-old daughter in the backseat, still strapped into her child safety seat. She suffered minor lacerations and was treated by medics at the scene and released to family.
“Had the child not been strapped in properly, a crash of this nature could have resulted in critical injuries,” stated Traffic Safety Lt. Jon Takamura. “Properly restraining your child in a car seat can mean the difference between life and death.”
Police closed Koloa Road, from Honuhonu Road to Omao Road, until roughly 8 p.m. The scene was cleared at 9:15 p.m.
The crash remains under police investigation.
