LIHUE — Mokihana Aquatics is now a county-sponsored program based out of the Kauai High School pool with satellite pools in Waimea and Kapaa, said coach Orlando “O” Anaya on Tuesday.
Kahu Wayne Vidinha of Ke Akua Mana Church officiated at a special blessing for representatives of the county, state, and Mokihana Aquatics swimmers and their parents.
“This is something I have been personally envisioning for the island for the past 33 years — an islandwide swimming program,” Anaya said. “This incredible working relationship between the state Department of Education, the County of Kauai, and Mokihana Aquatics is nothing short of magical.”
Anaya said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. was instrumental in getting everything resolved.
“We called a time out,” Carvalho said. “There was so much talk going around, and we just needed to come together at one place. I knew it was a situation where we could all work together to resolve this. We all agreed — it’s all for the kids.”
In October, Mokihana Aquatics starts its 34th year.
