KALAHEO — Waimea High School girls and the Kauai High School boys emerged in the lead of the Kauai High School air rifle competition following a day of intense shooting at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center Wednesday as the Menehune and the Kauai Interscholastic Federation hosted its second match of the season.
Tiffany Minia, being bested by her teammate Chelsea Samatra by a point in the prone position, topped the Menehune wahine with a day’s high 248 (93 prone, 68 standing, 87 kneeling) points to lead Waimea girls to a team total 1,205 points, a mere 11 points ahead of Kauai girls’ 1,188 points.
Team totals include point totals from five members of the eight-person squad on the firing line.
Alec Greer of Kauai High School picked up his second high-point honor, firing just four points shy of a perfect score in the prone position (96 points) en route to finishing with 266 (96-79-91) points to lead the Red Raider boys to an 1,195 showing over the Menehune men at 1,165 points, a difference of just 30 points.
The tight competition among shooters was demonstrated as Robyn Acob, last week’s top pointer, finished in Minia’s shadow by a point, collecting 247 (88-74-85) points while tying teammate Janine Prado (86-64-85-235) in the kneeling position with 85 points. Khryshia Pascual out-pointed Menehune girls in the standing position, finishing with 76 points en route to finishing No. 3 in the team scoring at 239 (84-76-79) points.
Kauai’s Brooke Hornos, last week’s top Red Raider lady scorer, spent the opening relay assisting with scorekeeping duty and returned to the firing line to finish with her second consecutive high-point Kauai honor at 253 (88-77-88) honors, posting the day’s highest scores in the standing (77 points) and kneeling (88 points) positions.
Her performance was bested by two points by teammate Krystle Pascua who finished with 240 (90-74-76) points. Kaori Kaya (82-70-86-238), Kailee Arakaki (86-74-70-230) and Xandra Masumoto (72-80-75-227) filled in the Kauai girls’ scorecard.
Kauai’s Ryker Amimoto (94-74-76-246), Ryan Valherdi (89-61-86-236), Brandon Marcos (79-77-71-227), and Kaimi Texeira (84-60-76-76-220) filled in the leaderboard.
Keane Caberto (87-70-79), topping Waimea boys’ scoring last week, was joined by Dennison Mopas (81-76-79) in leading the Menehune men, both shooters marking 236 points. Kenneth Ragus finished two points off the pace at 234 (90-67-77) followed by Devon Hartsell (93-59-79-231) and Braden Kobayashi (89-61-78-228).
No scores were available from the Island School at Kapaa High School matches at press time.
Waimea travels to the Kapaa High School range on Wednesday while Kauai moves to the Island School range. Both matches start at 3 p.m.
