LIHUE — Diane Wada of the YWCA of Kauai was so overwhelmed with the RSVP contribution, she was near tears Thursday at the Piikoi Building, Lihue Civic Center.
“I’m so happy I could cry,” Wada said. “We are so ready for all of this. We have three babies at the shelter right now, and they need supplies. We’re at capacity so this help is really needed.”
The RSVP volunteers, under the county’s Agency on Elderly Affairs, turned over collections spanning the past several weeks as part of the National Day of Service project done in conjunction with the remembrance of the 9/11 attacks.
Grace Delos Reyes, a project coordinator, estimated there were more than $1,500 in supplies. Diapers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and shampoo were turned over to the YWCA women’s shelter.
Celia Melchor-Questin, RSVP director, said the collection project is conducted so RSVP volunteers “get involved in the community.”
In addition to the National Day of Remembrance project, RSVP volunteers have also hosted back-to-school drives.
“We owe this to our information people,” Delos Reyes said. “They are out there in the field and know where help is needed. We all work together.”
