Kauai can survive climate change
I read reports on climate and overall survival of life here on Earth. It’s completely out of my realm of understanding.
Growing up, I always believed life was a learning device used to leave a better world for our children and grandchildren. Though somewhere in the back of my mind, I always went back to the cavemen when teaching my own children that we have to stay connected and united. Not one of us can achieve the peace of mind one desires without teamwork from us all. Instead of destroying one another, it’s much more beneficial to support each other.
Please, Kauai, all together we can make this the place I desired to be, with more love and aloha than I have ever witnessed. Proud my children are Kauaians. Together, we can do this. Together, we can achieve anything. There are so many unbelievable human beings on this island, I am very honored to be an acting part of it all.

Green waste system getting worse
Glenn Schot, (TGI letter Sept. 16), you are obviously not the only one wondering about the incredibly dysfunctional system of green waste disposal that we now have at the Hanalei Transfer Station.
Several months ago, when all this nonsense started, I wrote letters to the County Engineering Office and the mayor’s office, requesting an explanation and/or solution but to date neither has had any response. To make matters worse, even though the sign on the gate states “Hours of Operation” the green waste is often closed because the existing Dumpster is full and trucks are jockeying around trying to deal with it.
Consequently, we can load up, drive down and be turned around at the gate. I don’t think the backhoe operator or gentlemen working at the station are to blame, they have always been helpful and polite to me. I believe they are working within the limited boundaries of the ridiculous system currently in place.
The word on the street is that the “old” system as we know it, was poorly managed and was shut down the EPA due to runoff pollution, thereby violating of the Clean Water Act. However, we may never know the facts, because letters to the authorities go unanswered. One thing for sure, I have personally witnessed pickup trucks emptying their loads at the top of Kapaka Road. This must be the new “user-friendly” green waste station. I’m sure there are many more of these on the North Shore if we just go and find them.
