Get used to goofy stuff in Hawaii

I read Mr. Rosen’s missive in this morning’s paper (TGI, Oct. 23) and I agree with his logic but am afraid nothing will change. The state has an appalling way of wasting more money than a teenager with dad’s no limit credit card! Politics! The only Polly-ticks I’m interested in is a parrot who swallowed a clock! At least he’s not wasting money!

Don’t get me started on stupid “roundabouts,” barking dogs, landscaping the middle of the streets.

Film camp received strong support

Above Moon Films, a local nonprofit film program for keiki, recently completed a five-day film program at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. It was a special experience that took a community of contributors.

First and foremost, Principal Debra Badua. From greeting our students on the first day to ensuring that we had all the assistance we needed, Mrs. Badua was critical to making our program a success. And the friendly and helpful office staff.

Every morning started with a smile because Lucia “Lulu” Cummings, Laverne Villon, Leah “Teete” Matsushima, Jocelyn Laiz-Poepoe, Linda Victorino, and Valerie Perreira went above and beyond the call of duty. The environment our keiki learned in was beautiful. The CKMS campus is absolutely beautiful thanks to the professional grounds staff.

Special thanks to our instructors and guest lecturers Art Umezu, Kepa Kruse, Steve Watkins, Dolly Kanekuni, Elliot Lucas, Calen Hiramoto, and Isaiah Alvarez for inspiring and educating our future island filmmakers. Our students learned firsthand how to plan, organize, and produce a full-scale professional narrative film.

And the staff at Plantation Coffee Company, especially Kawika Kualii and Gail Mande, for providing healthy and yummy sandwiches and snacks for our students.

We began this program with the belief that by working together as one community we can support our keiki, teach our future filmmakers, and create something bigger than ourselves. The support we received for Filmmaker Bootcamp from the community of Kauai proves that we can.

Thanks to Mark and Tina

As regular coffee shop customers for the past 12 years we would like to say a big mahalo to Mark and Tina from Java Kai/Hanalei Coffee Roasters. The store was recently sold and now they get to take a day off after a decade of working seven days a week. What dedication.

The employees were amazing and Mark and Tina did an incredible job at their coffee shop as it ended up a being a home away from home for many tourists and locals from all over the island and the world. The place was so well organized and for all of us who were regulars they will be truly missed .

We wish the new owners, who presently own Baracuda Restaurant in Hanalei, the best in their new venture and hope they will keep the homey atmosphere for the locals and tourists alike.
