HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii football team returns to the friendly confines of Aloha Stadium and is set to meet San Diego State in a homecoming matchup on Hawaiian Airlines Field at 6 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised locally and statewide on Oceanic Cable (Digital Ch. 255 and HD Ch. 1255) and Hawaiian Telcom (Ch. 969) Pay-Per-View.
The fifth-most frequent of UH opponents, the San Diego State series is in its 29th meeting and dates back to 1939. Leading the series 18-9-2, the Aztecs are on a three-game series win streak, beginning when the Rainbow Warriors joined them in the Mountain West.
UH holds a 37-27-1 all-time record in homecoming games since 1949. The most recent homecoming contest was a 26-18 loss to Nevada on Oct. 25 last season. The Rainbow Warriors have lost their last three homecoming games after winning 10 straight from 2002-11.
SDSU’s nine-game advantage in the series built off a nine-year win streak in the 1990s. This will mark the fifth time that SDSU has been the homecoming opponent at Aloha Stadium. The Aztecs have won all four homecoming meetings.
The Rainbow Warriors need to win 5-of-8 remaining games to reach bowl eligibility and avoid a fifth straight losing season. UH is looking to get back to .500 at 3-3, reaching that mark for the first time since 2011, also seeking the seventh time in the past 20 seasons.
Sibling Rivalry: The younger brother of UH junior running back Steven Lakalaka is a current member of the Aztecs roster. Ronley Lakalaka is in his freshman season and wears No. 39 as a linebacker for SDSU. Ronley has played for the past two games and we could see an on-field sibling meet-up.
