LIHUE — The Kukui Grove Center kicked off Kauai Independent Food Bank’s annual Holiday Food and Fund Drive in a major way.
Shoppers at the center, including those celebrating the opening night of the monthlong Haunted House early this month, dropped 615 pounds of food and $3,777 for a total of $4,754.85 in donations over the weekend. Including the center’s agreement to match a dollar for every canned good up to $1,500, the contribution came in at $10,788.26.
“This is the 13th year Kukui Grove Center has been actively involved in this project which will help to ensure that people can enjoy the holidays with food,” said Wade Lord, Kukui Grove general manager. “We at Kukui Grove are proud and happy to be able and be involved with the community to help fight hunger, especially during the holiday season.”
The KIFB food drive, with a goal of $40,000 and 40,000 pounds of food, continues through Dec. 31
As part of the big donation Syngenta Seeds trucked in 1,003 pounds of food valued at $1,594.77. DuPont Pioneer dropped off 1,678 pounds valued at $2,668.02, and Dow Agrosciences contributed 808 pounds valued at $1,284.72.
Kukui Grove Center continues its efforts at helping the community with its monthlong Haunted House which runs Friday and Saturday. Friday night hours are from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday hours are from noon to 7 p.m. with proceeds benefiting a different community nonprofit group each week.
This week’s beneficiaries is Halau Hula Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinaala with Kumu Hula Leinaala Pavao-Jardin. Next week’s nonprofit beneficiary is the 4-H program on Kauai. During the final week leading to Halloween, the Kauai County Farm Bureau is the selected beneficiary. They will designate a recipient for the proceeds.
The Kukui Grove Center, in partnership with the KQNG Radio Group, Natural Pet Hawaii, and the Kauai Animal Welfare Society, will also present its second Howl-O-Ween Dog Costume Contest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24 with KQNG’s Ron Wiley hosting the event at the exhibition area.
