Kapaa High School’s varsity girls volleyball team defeated Hana of the Maui Interscholastic League, 2-0, Thursday afternoon in a consolation match of the New City Nissan Girls Volleyball Championships — Division II tournament.
The Warrior wahine defeated the Dragons, 25-14 and 25-10, at Kaimuki High School in Honolulu.
“Well, a couple of things. I think they just played their game, definitely,” said Kapaa head coach Evan Costa in a phone interview following Thursday’s match.
“I think the positioning factored. Hana, I know they’re a scrappy team. We played them before,” Costa said. “Our girls just settled down. They were much more settled today. We served well. We kept the ball alive. We gave ourselves more opportunities than we did yesterday. We were able to run our offense.”
Warriors senior middle blocker Siokapesi Paua had five kills against Hana. Senior outside hitter Haaheo Mahinai and junior middle blocker Paea Tafea each had four kills. Mahinai also had six aces. Senior setter Kunani Tuttle had 16 assists. Junior libero Kainani Moniz had 10 digs.
In the tournament’s opening round Wednesday, Kapaa lost to University Laboratory School of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 3-0, at Kaimuki High School. The Warriors were swept by the Jr. Bows, 25-18, 25-13 and 15-13.
“Being a first-time team, no excuse but University High, they were solid,” Costa said about Wednesday’s match. “We had a hard time putting the ball away and making kills. They were a more crisp, calm team. … We had our runs, but still wasn’t able to hang on with them like we needed to.”
Senior backside hitter Tori Daligcon-Pomaikai had five kills in Wednesday’s match. Tuttle had 11 assists. Moniz had 12 digs.
Kapaa will play Hawaii Preparatory Academy of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation at 4 p.m. today at Farrington High School. HPA defeated Pahoa, also of the BIIF, in two sets Wednesday, 25-17, 25-15.
“We still got work to do,” Costa said about the upcoming consolation match. “I hope we can get a workout in tomorrow. And then hopefully, we’ll show up at 4 o’clock and play some good volleyball.”
