Scary strikes, haunted headpins

LIHUE — This Halloween night, Kauai Bowl will be hosting ghosts and goblins, monsters and McJaggers for the first Haunted Booling, a night of music, food and Rock N Bowling.

The fundraiser will be from 6-9 p.m. and everyone between the ages of 14 and 24 is invited.

There will also be a costume contest and door prizes.

“It’s going to be a blast,” said Faith Harding executive director of Mission: Yes, the nonprofit sponsoring the event. “It’s free if you wear a costume, and if you can spare a $5 donation great, but if not, no big deal.”

Mission: Yes formed a year ago, according to Harding, with the goal of providing an after-hours place for the youth of Kauai to enjoy a safe, positive nightlife scene.

“We want to provide a place to go hang out other than Kukui Grove,” Harding said. “So we’re starting with this event on Halloween and it’ll be our introduction to the island.”

Harding said the nonprofit is targeting young adults to provide mentorship and collaboration opportunities.

“That age group is underserved and underrepresented,” Harding said. “There are lots of moms that have told me that demographic gets left out a lot.”

Harding explained there are plenty of organizations that cater to young kids, but teenagers tend to disappear into the mix.

“This demographic has something to say if given the chance,” Harding said. “There are great ideas that come out of this demographic.”

Harding said she hopes the start-up’s first event will bring in some money and get the word out about Mission: Yes and its goals.

“Right now we’re concentrating on raising money for the location in Lihue, but eventually we’d like to branch out to the Westside,” Harding said. “Halloween night, though, is just going to be a gathering of people and we’ll have a little bit of information to share about us.”
