Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride will arrive on the island of Oahu on Thursday for a three-day cycling event that helps injured service members overcome physical, mental, and emotional wounds. Injured veterans from across the country will have the opportunity to see Oahu’s beaches and visit Pearl Harbor.
“We know that visiting the site of Pearl Harbor will impact the wounded veterans in an emotional way, but we are excited that the riders will be able to connect with such a historical site while overlooking the beauty of Hawaii,” said Dan Schnock, director of Soldier Ride.
James Towey of Kapaa is a veteran who will benefit from the bike ride.
Towey enlisted in the Army in May 2004. He served across the country and the world, including several deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait,
“While serving he was put in danger’s way more than a few times and years of wear and tear on his body left him no choice but to have surgery,” according to a press release.
Towey is recovering from the surgery.
Soldier Ride often acts as an introductory program for injured servicemen and servicewomen who then go on to conquer new challenges. Participants will cycle more than 40 miles and also engage in team building exercises such as kayaking and paddleboarding.
