WAIMEA — Cheer squads from the Kauai Pop Warner Football League thrilled an overflow audience at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea Sunday.
Of the dozen squads representing the five KPWFL associations, six were eligible to earn rights to advance to the 2015 Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance competition scheduled to take place during the first week of December in Orlando, Florida.
“This should be a tight competition,” said Yvonne Hosaka, the Wescon cheer coordinator. “Today’s event, the regional and national qualifying event, should have two Junior Midget, Level 3 squads, two Junior Peewee Level 2 teams, and one Junior Midget Level 1 squad.”
Those teams earned a pair of Mickey Mouse ears for its coach to accompany their trophies, symbolizing the trip to Florida to compete against more than 300 teams from across the country.
The Lihue Patriots Junior Midget Level 1 squad was unchallenged for its single berth to the nationals, its routine filling the gym with high-powered stunting and choreography. Its performance commanded 77.87 points in the judging.
The Hanapepe Colts Junior Peewee secured top honors in the Level 2 competition with 74.30 points over the Kekaha Titans JPW Level 2 squad who culled 67.50 points.
On the competitive Junior Midget, Level 3 stage, the Kapaa Eagles soared to 84.47 points and the coveted set of mouse ears and the trophy.
Kekaha Titans earned the final eligibility spot with its second place finish at 75.57 points, just 3.25 points ahead of the Hanapepe Colts who finished with 72.37 points.
Other teams participating in the regional and national qualifying spirit championship include the Koloa Redskins Mitey Mites, the Kapaa Eagles JPW, the Hanapepe Colts Tiny Mites and Mitey Mites, the Kekaha Titans mascots, the Lihue Patriots Tiny Mites and Mitey Mites, and the Lihue Patriots JPW.
