LIHUE — The morning sprinkles were not the only thing keeping people away from the family distribution Friday at the Salvation Army, Lihue Corps.
“People don’t like coming out in this kind of weather,” said Victor Lucas of the Salvation Army. “They’ll be here before the day ends.”
Lt. Elizabeth Gross of the Salvation Army, Lihue Corps, said another factor was that registration for Angel Tree packages is below last year’s figures.
“I don’t have the exact counts,” Gross said. “But there are definitely less families who registered for the Angel Tree.”
Families who braved the wind and rain each received a bag of groceries, including a gift card from Foodland. Some continued in the line to receive Angel Tree packages.
Friday was the final day of the Angel Tree program for 2015.
Gross said this year’s distribution was handled by the Lihue Corps staff, church members and youth groups.
“Christmas is really big in the Marshall Islands,” said Jeff Thomas, a youth volunteer. “We do a lot of singing and dancing. It’s always done at a church with the main thing being the Christmas story. We’re going to try and do it here this year.”
