HONOLULU — Renato Desouza of Lihue was the first Kauai finisher at the Honolulu Marathon which unfolded Sunday morning in Honolulu.
Desouza crossed the finish line at 196th place with a time of 3 hours, 24 minutes and 39 seconds, or a 7:49 pace in the field which attracted more than 30,000 runners. Desouza — who is no stranger to runs on Kauai, and who finished sixth in the 2015 Kauai Marathon — was running in the male, age 40-44 group.
Felix Kiprotich of Kenya topped the overall event, crossing at 2:11:43, just about a minute ahead of Wilson Chebet, also of Kenya (2:12:46) and Daniel Limo (2:13:24). Robert Kwambai (2:15:27) and Kenneth Mungara (2:18:36) rounded out the cluster of Kenyan runners at the finish line. All five runners were in the Male Elite category. Kiprotich’s finish was 31 seconds off the course record set in 2004 by Jimmy Muindi of Kenya, and tied the 1986 time of 2:11:43 set by Ibrahim Hussein of Kenya.
Florian Neuschwander (2:27:58) of Frankfurt, Germany, interrupted the chain of Kenyans at sixth place before Joyce Chepkirui, a Kenyan and the first woman finisher, crossed in seventh place overall with a 2:28:34 run. Lucy Karimi (2:28:55) and Isabella Ochichi (2:29:44), both women runners from Kenya, rounded out the top 10 overall finishers.
Some of the other Kauai lead runners finishing include Keoni Kahn Macko of Kapaa finishing the 26-mile course in 3:52:04 followed by Ray Charron of Kapa at 3:55:09, just ahead of Troy Keipper (3:55:34).
Connie Lutkevich of Kalaheo crossed at 3:52:35.
