LIHUE — The top five boys and girls shooters with the best average scores from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season were named Air Riflery All Stars.
Those who qualified not only had to have one of the best averages, but had to have competed in at least four of the six KIF matches.
Kauai High School seniors Alec Greer and Brooke Hornos were the top shooters this year. Greer led the boys with an average of 256.5 and Hornos led the girls with 259.0.
“It means everything to me,” Hornos said. “Just being at the top was one of my goals since freshman year.”
Hornos added her sister Brianne, who graduated from Kauai High in 2011, left her mark with the school’s air riflery team and she had “big shoes to fill.”
“My sister was the top shooter her senior year,” Hornos said. “I just thought that I had to follow in her footsteps.”
Kauai High coach Marcela Hornos said this is the third season Brooke, her daughter, finished as the best girls shooter.
The Red Raiders coach added Hornos and Greer separated themselves because of their ability to focus.
“They don’t let anything bother them. They focus, and they’re great leaders,” she said. “I think they feed off of each other when they’re next to each other at the range.”
“They’ve worked hard. These seniors have stuck together since they were in the ninth grade,” Marcela added about her four all stars. “They’re a great bunch of kids.”
Waimea has the most all stars this year with five — four girls and one boy.
“It’s a good feeling. I feel like I improved more than I did last year,” said Waimea junior Khryshia Pascual, who was this year’s third best among the girls with an average of 246.5. “It’s a big accomplishment for me.”
“We’re a smaller school, so it’s hard to get athletes to come out,” added Menehune coach Victor Aguilar. “For our kids to make all stars, especially because they play multi sports, it’s great.”
Warriors sophomore Ian Kimura was the only non-Red Raider or Menehune to make the list.
Kapaa coach Ian Verasammy said Kimura, though young and usually doesn’t speak much, is the unquestioned leader of his air riflery team and is this year’s most valuable player.
“He’s quiet, but he’s respected by his peers,” Verasammy said. “We’re really proud of him. It’s something he worked hard for. We really see him moving aggressively into the next season. We have some real goals for him, some high standards.”
