As a property owner and someone who has been coming yearly to Kauai since the early 1980s, I am very concerned about the proposed dairy (farm). I have read about the environmental impacts it will no doubt cause and common sense will tell you that the odors that will follow will be nauseating. I am in a unique position to comment on another problem this dairy (farm) will no doubt cause.
Growing up in Del Mar, California, I have seen my entire life what happens when 700 race horses get shipped in for our 7-week horse race meet. The first week there is not much change but by the second week comes the “zombie apocalypse” of flies. It is ridiculous. Your outside spaces, where you once had a nice summer dinner, become unusable. Restaurants and stores all have to make changes and install fly fans above their doors to stop the flies from entering their businesses. Outdoor eateries within a 3-mile radius suffer and it becomes a huge problem for everyone across the board. Luckily as the horses get shipped back to Los Angeles, the flies leave as well, and about two weeks after the season is over, the flies are gone and it is back to business as usual.
This 7-week horse race meet has been going on since the 1940s. There were no homes anywhere near this race track when it was opened and people built their homes knowing full well that every year there would be horses and flies coming to the area. I am all for land rights but I do not agree that you can come into your neighbors’ back yard and ruin their businesses, ruin their property values and ruin the environment. The dairy was not there when Kalipaki Joe’s opened or the Hyatt or Brenneckes, so how they can even think of putting an industrial dairy upwind 2 miles away from all these businesses defies all common sense.
This proposed dairy (farm) is only 2-2.5 miles from basically every restaurant, hotel and resort on the entire South Shore. There is no doubt being down-tradewind and having so many livestock so close, Poipu will become the fly capital of the islands. A quick Google search and I found that Kauai already has the biting fly, or horse fly as I have always called it. Aside from the dangers associated with non-biting flies, biting flies can transmit diseases including Tuberculosis, cholera, and the list goes on and on. You do not need to be an entomologist to have common sense. Please do not let the dairy (farm) go ahead.
