LIHUE — Kapaa junior varsity boys soccer coach Kevin Devitt waited a long time to find out how the boys would fare on the field.
“I haven’t seen them play in a game, yet,” Devitt said Thursday evening at Vidinha Stadium. “This is the first time the boys will be playing, and it will be interesting to see how they do.”
Starting with an abbreviated nine-man format, the Kapaa JV boys finished with a 4-0 win over Waimea. The Kapaa JV girls roared to a 5-0 halftime lead en route to its 12-0 final in the nightcap.
Despite the win, Devitt said the team has work to do.
“They’re beginning to see the field, and they get along well together,” the coach said. “They support each other well. But we still need to work on offsides and increasing the speed of play.”
Kapaa JV boys Levi Cummings, Jai Koga, Josh Layoen and Caden Donner found the net in the second half following Waimea injuries which trimmed the field to just seven Menehune.
“The boys were playing short to begin with,” said Kalei Gardner, Waimea JV coach. “Following the injuries in the second half, they were playing double and triple duty.”
Despite the short field, Devitt was impressed with Waimea’s play.
“They compacted the field and turned the game competitive,” he said.
Taelyn Nunes had a hat trick, or three goals scored, to lead the Kapaa JV girls in its shutout over Waimea.
Mahealani Chandler and Victoria Hennessy each netted two goals to help the JV Warriors, who posted two goals in the first four minutes of play to set the pace.
Mikela Griffin, Hannah Collins-Doijode, Jaylana Ladera, Neveah Arruda-Kapu, and Sheila Blum rounded out the Warrior JV offense.
Kapaa next faces the Kauai High School JV on Saturday at Vidinha Stadium, where the boys take the field starting at 10 a.m. followed by the JV girls kicking off at 11:45 a.m.
Waimea will have a week to heal before facing Kauai High School on Thursday at Vidinha Stadium with the boys starting at 5 p.m. and the girls starting at 6:45 p.m.
