LIHUE — Richard Leibman, the man sometimes referred to on Kauai as the “Jesus Bandit,” was captured Tuesday, the Honolulu Police Department said.
He was arrested about 1:30 a.m. on the beach fronting Halekulani after a brief foot chase, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Blane.
Leibman, 38, escaped from the Hawaii State Hospital on Oahu at 6:40 p.m. Saturday after walking out of an unlocked door while staff was transitioning another patient. Hospital personnel chased him but lost sight of him after he went into a heavy brush area.
Hawaii State Department of Health Spokeswoman Janice Okubo said the incident was under investigation.
Leibman has a criminal history on Kauai, which includes burglary, theft, resisting arrest, escape and assault against a law enforcement officer.
He has on several occasions been found unfit to proceed for trial by a panel of three doctors.
He is known as the “Jesus Bandit” to residents because he has been seen with a long beard and wearing a robe much like the Biblical character.
