SEATTLE — Kauai’s Pierce Murphy started the indoor track season with a strong performance in the Husky Classic on Friday at the University of Washington.
The University of Colorado senior placed second in the 5,000-meter race when he finished in 13:40.12. The winner, Oregon’s Edward Cheserek, clocked 13:35:86.
Sixty-six men raced the 5,000 in three heats.
It was Murphy’s first race since he charged to a third-place finish in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November, where Cheserek was also the winner.
Murphy, a 2011 Island School graduate, is in his final year with the Buffaloes. His time Friday was the second-fastest NCAA 5,000 meter run of the season. He just missed his personal best of 13:39.85, which he set last year.
