WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American Medical Association presented Kauai District Health Officer Dileep G. Bal, M.D., with the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. Bal was selected for the AMA’s top government service award in recognition of his contributions in various local cancer, tobacco and obesity control efforts.
“Dr. Bal has been a dedicated community servant in California and Hawaii for nearly half a century,” said AMA Board Chair Stephen R. Permut, M.D. “He is known by many as a key player in the development of innovative and effective initiatives, from California’s ban on cigarette vending machines to low-income medical care and obesity prevention efforts in Kauai. In addition to serving as a past president for the American Cancer Society, Dr. Bal has published and reviewed for medical journals in areas of cancer prevention and control.”
Bal was one of eight honorees chosen this year to receive the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. The award, named for the founding father of the AMA, recognizes elected and career officials in federal, state or municipal service whose outstanding contributions have promoted the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.
Bal was presented with the award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., as part of the AMA’s National Advocacy Conference.
