KALAHEO — Angeline Nizo had a field day Thursday night during the opening of the county’s Division II youth basketball series at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Nizo, playing for the Kauai Lynx, finished with a game-high 18 points to spark the Lynx in its 25-15 win over Kaulupono.
“She’s in the fifth grade,” said Lynx coach Clarence Sales. “But when she came out, we moved her up so she played in Division I with the students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Division II is for students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. This is just for fun. I tell the girls to never forget to have fun.”
Nizo nailed eight of the Lynx’s 10 points before Kaulupono got started in the third period.
“My daughter plays for Kaulupono,” said Fran Constantino, coach for the SuperSonics Division I team. “She’s the one who dropped the three-pointer.”
Katelyn Constantino kick started Kaulupono, lighting up the crowd and the scoreboard as the team coached by Pedro Saligumba outperformed the Lynx when Shylah Rita-Bagaoisan dropped a bucket for the 5-4 edge over the Lynx in the third period.
Rita-Bagaoisan and Grace Sabo led the Kaulupono scoring with six points apiece, and Katelyn’s three-ball accounted for the math.
Joleina Cumlat helped Nizo’s lead with three points, and pairs from Denise Alfonso and Kate Lynn Colipano iced the Lynx victory.
Josh Graves dropped 14 points and Ethan Inanod added 11 points to lead the Island School Blue team to its 47-20 win over Team Lihue B. Levy Snowden finished with 10 points in the balanced offense. Kiawe Grubbe and Luke Sullivan added four points apiece, Sullivan igniting the home crowd when he dropped his bucket in the final period. Tristan Temme and Cameron Hubler iced the victory with pairs.
Bryden Ibaan topped the Team Lihue scoring with eight points and Mike Manera added six points. Aiden Yasay finished with three and a pair from Kellen Coloma rounded out the effort.
David Sabo Jr. scored 17 points to lead Papalina-Orange to a 52-29 win over the Hanamaulu Hawks in the final Division I match played in the spring season. Keane Tibon, Nick Herbig and Kahanu Davis each dropped in six points and pairs from Pono Carvalho and Sonny Kuhlman rounded out the win.
The Hawks got a pair of treys from D.T. Garalde and one from Arvin Lomboy in the opening frame as the Hawks took an 11-2 edge over Papalina. But the Hawks were limited to just a bucket by Don R. B. Bumanglag in the second period as Papalina went to Sabo Jr. for eight of its 13 points to overtake the Hanamaulu boys.
Lomboy topped the Hawks’ scoring with 12 points, including two treys followed by Garalde with six points. Ricky Malu Ralston added four, Trey Omura-Hernandez ended with a three-ball in the fifth frame, and a pair from Bumanglag rounded out the effort.
