LIHUE — Guest artists in the seventh week of the 10-week E Kanikapila Kakou Hawaiian Music Program will be presenters from the nonprofit Malie Foundation, whose mission is to provide events that educate, promote, preserve and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
LIHUE — Guest artists in the seventh week of the 10-week E Kanikapila Kakou Hawaiian Music Program will be presenters from the nonprofit Malie Foundation, whose mission is to provide events that educate, promote, preserve and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
It’s the “Community Hula Night Hana Hou” including Nathan Kalama, co-founder of the Foundation and Maka Herrod, its executive director. Guests can expect culture and humor, along with a hoike, followed by an hour more of hula and music by Kauai artists.
Starting at 6 p.m. Monday at Kauai Beach Resort, attendees will join one of three groups of instructors teaching hula auana, or modern hula; hula kahiko, or ancient hula; or hapa haole hula, or hula performed to songs rendered in English lyrics.
At 7 p.m., audience members will hoike, or demonstrate, what they learned in the hula hour.
At 8 p.m., guest artists including Uncle Nathan Kalama, Maka Herrod, Aunty Bev Muraoka and more, will continue the evening of hula and music.
A donation of $5 to $10 is suggested.
