Nicole Okuna of the Sheraton Kauai Resort brought more than a big check to the Kauai Interscholastic Federation Swim Championships Saturday. She also brought a big smile. “I used to swim for Waiakea High School on the Big Island when I was in high school,” Okuna said. “My best stroke was the butterfly, and every time I pass this pool and see all the tents and banners, I cannot help but get excited.”
That thrilled Frank Funtanilla (he was heading for one of the timing stations) whose daughter Sara is one of three Waimea High School swimmers competing in the KIF.
Kudos to Kaipo Kealalio and his Island School ohana on a great job with the championships. Coach Kelii Morgado was there starting his busy day because he was heading to the girls soccer game between Kapaa and Kauai and ending up at the boys basketball game between Kapaa and Kauai.
Kudos to coaches William Aki of Kapaa and Brandon Moises of Waimea on a great finale for the KIF girls basketball season Friday night (Chris Ang was having one of those fried Spam musubi), and congratulations to Coach Jordan Danner on winning the KIF JV girls title!
