Saint Louis School senior Nate Herbig again committed to Pac-12 school Stanford University. He announced his commitment on Twitter last week.
“I just (like) what Stanford has to offer me in the classroom. And they’re probably sending two draft picks, offensive lineman, in the first round this year to the NFL,” Herbig said in a phone interview Tuesday. “They’re one of the best offensive lineman programs in the country, and they finished No. 3. And also they have the best education on the West Coast. Really, it was a no-brainer for me to pick Stanford.”
Herbig, a Kalaheo native, verbally committed to Stanford in June of last year. He announced his de-commitment and reopened his recruiting in December.
During that time since, he also considered Oklahoma, Washington, Arizona State and Cal.
“I wanted to look at all my options,” Herbig said. “You never know. You don’t ever want to be that person that regrets.”
“I’ve seen the other schools. There’s some really nice campuses. But what Stanford has is amazing,” he added.
Herbig is set to make the move to California on June 15 — soon after he graduates from Saint Louis School in Honolulu. He’s not sure yet on what he will major in.
“It’s a dream come true. As a kid, even on Kauai, I always wanted to play college football,” he said. “I dreamed about this day. My journey is just getting started.”
Herbig has aspirations of playing in the National Football League and hopes the move to Stanford will set him up for such an opportunity.
“The way they breed offensive lineman and send them to the NFL, that was a big thing for me,” he said. “Of course my dream is to play in the NFL, but I have to be realistic, too. If I don’t make it, I’ll be set up with a degree from Stanford. It opens a lot of doors.”
