KILAUEA — The county’s boys basketball Division I games inaugurated the repairs at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center Tuesday night under a blanket of blustery winds punctuated with sprinkles.
“This is the first time games are being played here,” said Philip Baclayon, Hanakila basketball coordinator. “It’s a good thing it’s not raining, although it doesn’t seem like anything leaked through the roof.”
Baclayon kept things clean, asking spectators and players to clean their footwear before entering the gym which sported new side flooring and a refinished surface with all of the lights working.
Gerald Salud of the C Town Bulls coached by Daniel Simao said their team had only one loss heading into their final game of the Division I play.
Hanakila, the Bulls’ opponent, was sporting an undefeated record heading into its final game of the season.
Jaron Acantilado finished with 11 points, including a trey in the fourth period to lead the Bulls to an eventual 46-31 win behind a productive sixth period when the Bulls pulled off a 15-7 run led by Xyrus Dela Cruz dropping five of his game-total 11 points.
Braden Simao, the low post, finished with nine points and Jim Ehia added six first-half points. Salud also finished with six points and Kobe Balisacan rounded out the Bulls’ scoring on four points.
Hero Raza topped the Hanakila scoring on nine points followed by Nathan Gardner with seven points before leaving the match with an injury in the second half. Gio Rodriguez finished with four points, Derrick Jarquio and Kawai Apana each dropped a bomb from outside the three-point arc, Chanson Hawelu-Inanod ended with a pair and a digit from John Calvan fueled the Hanakila effort.
Earlier in the night, the Island School Gold got 10 points from Reagan Wilson and eight points from Luke Hunadi to fire up a 23-18 win over Team Lihue. Josh Dobashi and Nate Sullivan each added a pair in the victory.
Bryden Ibaan topped all scorers with 10 points with Kellen Coloma firing up the Team Lihue effort with six points, and Mike Manera adding a pair.
Another Lihue team, the Kauai Thunder may have not been as tall or as big as the G.I. Hoops Green, but fired off 11 of its 13 buckets from outside the three-point arc to stay in the game against the G.I. Hoops Green team. The G.I. Hoops Green took the match 71-37.
Joshua Rego topped the Thunder effort on nine points, all treys, followed by Caleb Plowman and Cael “La‘a” Aceret each ending with six points, all treys. Matthew Rivera finished with four points, and Joe Ansel Puplava, Tyrus Duran, Andrew “AJ” Galiza, and Keylan Felipe-Calapatia each dropping one from outside the three-point arc.
Jhencen Cummings topped the G.I. Hoops Green scoring on 19 points followed by Cameron Booth adding 16 points and Kilakila Hepa dropping 14 points. La‘akea Gonsalves dropped 10 points in the opening period. Curtis Fujito-Pascua finished with five points, including a trey, and Ryan Laborte also dropped a three-ball in the third period.
