WAILUA — California’s K.K. Limbhasut blasted through strong winds at Wailua Golf Course to shoot a 6-under 66 on Thursday during the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament.
Limbhaust took control of the individualists with a two-day 7-under 137 followed by teammate Shotaro Ban (72-68-140), the defending individual champion. Texas’ Gavin Hall (69-71-140) is tied for second place.
The performances from Limbhasut, including birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, and 17 and 18, and Ban helped California, five-time defending champion of the John Burns Intercollegiate, close in on first place.
Texas, led by Hall and a 1-under 71 from Branson Davis, continues to hold the lead with a two-day 560 (276-284), seven strokes ahead of California (288-279-567).
Texas A&M, led by 3-under 69s from Adria Arnaus and Cameron Champ, is third at 577 (292-285).
Host University of Hawaii A team, sitting in the No. 5 spot following Wednesday’s opening round, slipped to a tie for eighth place with Kennesaw State and No. 14 Virginia at 585.
Skye Inakoshi shot a 3-under 69 to end in a tie for fourth place in the individualists with a two-day 141. James Moran-Hortan, a Maui native, tumbled from an opening round 69 to a 3-over 75 for a tie for 18th place. Scotty Yamashita ended with a 2-over 74 for a two-day 149 (75-74).
Competing for the University of Hawaii B team, Kauai natives Bryden Salvador is at 159 (80-79) and Pono Tokioka is tied for 43rd at 5-over 149 (76-73).
The final round for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 this morning.
