LIHUE — Kauai High School students stood out in the eighth season of CyberPatriot – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.
Led by coach Greg Anderson, the KHS team excelled in the recent CyberPatriot VIII qualifying rounds, demonstrating teamwork, critical thinking skills, and technical knowledge key to a successful career in cybersecurity.
The team’s performance earned it a spot in the regionals, where it won the Open Division’s Region Silver 1st Place Tier Award.
It was Kauai High School’s inaugural season participating in the CyberPatriot competition.
Anderson said Jacky Lin and Akira Takabayashi surpassed expectations by winning first place in the Silver Tier of the At-Large Region.
“These students had no experience in cybersecurity prior to joining the CyberPatriot Team,” a press release said. “With little technical assistance from industry experts, the team navigated through complex security concepts and demonstrated a high level of understanding.”
The Cyber Defense Competition challenges teams of two to six students to find and resolve cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated environments. Top teams from the preliminary online rounds win an all-expenses-paid trip to Baltimore, Maryland next month for the live National Finals Competition, where students compete for national recognition and scholarships.
In all, 3,379 teams registered to compete in CyberPatriot VIII.
