Kauai officials identified victims of a drowning and a highway crash over the weekend, while a search was suspended for a man swept to sea last week.
The man who drowned Saturday in the vicinity of Ninini Beach was identified as Irwin Cadiz, 30, of Kapaa.
An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.
According to a county press release, a fisherman notified police dispatch Saturday evening a male swimmer in distress in the area known as Running Waters.
Engine-3, a battalion chief and Rescue-3 aboard Air-1 responded to the 5:16 p.m. alarm.
The man was found unresponsive underwater in a cave and brought to shore by the rescue specialists.
Firefighters performed CPR on the victim until Medic-21 arrived. The medics then transported the victim to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The 23-year-old Koloa woman who died in a two-car crash on Kaumualii Highway in Kekaha Saturday was identified as Kekailani Pau.
Police said Pau was a passenger in a Honda Civic driven by a 25-year-old Kekaha man. The man, whose identity has not been released, remains in critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
According to police, the Honda was eastbound on the Kaumualii highway near the entrance to Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor around 3:20 p.m. when a westbound vehicle made a left turn in front of the Honda into the roadway leading to the harbor.
The 25-year-old lost control of his vehicle, crossed the centerline and crashed sideways into a Ford Ranger heading west.
The driver of the Ranger, a 55-year-old Kekaha woman, sustained minor injuries and was released at the scene. There were no passengers in the pick-up truck.
The identity of the woman has not been released.
Police believe speed was a factor in the crash.
Meanwhile, authorities Sunday suspended a three-day search for a Chicago man who was swept out to sea while taking photos Thursday along the rocks at Queen’s Bath.
Coordinated efforts were made, which included Kauai police and fire departments, the Ocean Safety Bureau, and the Coast Guard.
The search turned up no sign of the victim.
