Robert ‘Bob’ A.C. Chang Jr.
Robert “Bob” A.C. Chang Jr. of Lihue passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on March 11, 2016. He was 72 years old. Bob was born on June 5, 1943, in Honolulu.
He graduated from Kapiolani Technical Schoo, he was a retired Hotel Chef, he has worked for the Halekulani Hotel, The Royal Lahaina Hotel, Wai`ohai Hotel, and he was the Executive Chef for the Kauai Resort Hotel for 20 years. He last worked at Sueoka Store during this retirement years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert A.C. Chang Sr. and Vivian Takamatsu Chang; sister, Tammy Higa; brother, Walter Crandall Chang; and beloved nieces, Krishelle Higa and Brenda Chang Martin.
He is survived by his brothers Christian (Connie) J. Chang Sr. of Lihue; Jack (Margaret) Chang Sr. of Hilo; brother-in-law Wayne Higa of Honolulu; nieces Verna (Moki) Okami, Tanya (Ferdinand) Dosono of Kauai, Michelle (James) Hsu of California; nephews, Christian (Shirley) Chang Jr., Ryan (Sheila Guzman) Chang, Kevin Chang of Kauai; Jack Chang Jr., Michael Chang, Eluwene Chang of Honolulu, Kelly Chang of France, Keith (Marie) Higa of California.
Private Service will be held at a later date.
Family requests no flowers and no monetary offerings.
Arrangements were handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary and Mililani Memorial Park and Mortuary.
Mary Catherine Thayer
Mary Catherine Thayer, 91, of Coos Bay, Oregon, breathed her last and passed into the loving arms of Jesus on March 4, 2016.
She died in her own home of natural causes and was encircled by loved ones.
A very short convalescence, she’d welcomed guests into her home to celebrate 91 years of life just two weeks prior.
Mary was born Feb 19, 1925, in Pasadena, California. She studied at Pasadena City College, then moved to Oceanside, California for her first teaching assignment. Since 2005, she stayed actively involved with her rental business in Coos Bay. For recreation she enjoyed gardening, watercolor painting and taking writing classes at SOCC. Her greatest joy was traveling extensively with family, including frequent visits to her clan on Kauai.
A memorial gathering on April 2, 2016, will be held at a family home in Princeville, Hawaii, where her ashes will be placed with the planting of a new mango tree, as per her request.
Mary was preceded in death by husband, David Thayer and brother, Ronald Johnson. She is survived by 4 children, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and a brother and sister-in-law.
William ‘Bill’ A.S Akana
William “Bill” A.S Akana passed away March 13, 2016, at the age of 92. Born on Jan. 3, 1924, in Koolau, Kauai, he was the office manager for First Insurance Co. and later president of Akana Insurance Agency, Inc. until retirement. A veteran of WWII, chamber president, member of the Rotary Club of Lihue, Senior Warden of All Saint’s Episcopal Church and an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer.
He is preceded in death by his father William “Willy” K. Akana, former asst., manager of Kilauea Plantation, and mother, Janet M. Akana, a teacher at Kilauea and Wilcox Schools.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Marge” Akana and son, Scott P. Akana; grandsons, Brandon, Cody (Amanda) and graddaughter, Saige, great-grandchildren, Marley, Ryan and Avery.
Service at All Saints Episcopal Church, Kapaa, Thursday, March 31, 9 a.m. visitation and service at 10 a.m. Bill requested Aloha attire and in lieu of flowers, donations to All Saint’s Episcopal Church or your favorite Charity.
Philip M. Yamagata
Philip M. Yamagata of Kapaa, Hawaii passed away at home on March 15, 2016, at the age of 81. Born on Nov. 30, 1934, in Kapaa, he was an Army Veteran and the owner of Y. Yoshimura Store.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Yamagata; sisters, Edith (Hideo) Oride and Hanako Yamagata; and brother-in-law, Hisashi Unemori.
Philip is survived by his wife, Helene K. Yamagata; son, Randy K. Yamagata; daughter, Jeri L. Yamagata; sisters, Nancy Unemori, Janet (Isamu) Yoshishige, and Leatrice Tanaka; sister-in-law, Janet Yamagata; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Kapaa Jodo Mission. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. with services to follow from 11 a.m. to noon.
The family suggests casual attire.

Edward William ‘Red’ Carveiro
Edward William “Red” Carveiro was born on Sept. 30, 1937, and passed away on March 23, 2016, at the age of 78.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he retired as an equipment operator from the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation, Highway Division.
Edward is survived by his wife, Yvonne Freitas Carveiro; daughter, Annette (Ernie) Barreira; son, Dane (Glory) Carveiro; grandchildren, Aaron, Brittney and Erik Barreira, and Quentin and Gareson Carveiro; brother, Charles (Claire) Carveiro of Lawai; sisters, Janet Carveiro, Isabelle Tavares of Kalaheo, and MaryAnn (Allen) VanderVeen of Washington State; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Mass to follow.

Rhoda Susana Pahulehua
Rhoda Susana Pahulehua of Puuwai, Niihau, passed away at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on March 24, 2016, at the age of 57. Born on Sept. 11,1959, in Puuwai, Niihau, she was a God fearing woman, a loving wife and mother, and a former Hawaiian immersion school founder/educator.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Pahulehua, Jr.; sons, Melvin (Brittany) Pahulehua, Ainsley Pahulehua, Dave Kanahele and Jay Ni’au III; daughters, Princess Pahulehua, Holly Pahulehua, Gina (Michael) Shintani, Janine Ni’au, SaraLei Pahulehua; brothers; James Kahale of Makaweli, Allan (Gladys) Kahale of Kekaha, Ricky (Amy) Kahale of Kekaha; sisters; Joyce Simao of Hanapepe, Debbie (Ambrose) Kanahele of Kekaha, Laurie (Mitchell) Kali of Hanapepe, Caroline Kahale of Kekaha, Maile (Dereck) Kanahele of Makaweli; grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended relatives.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. with burial to follow at the Kekaha Hawaiian Cemetery.
Aloha attire is suggested and flowers are welcomed.

Edward Calija
Edward Calija of Kaumakani passed away on March 5, 2016. Born on Oct. 13, 1968, in the Philippines, he was a housekeeper with Waiohai, Diamond Resort and Pacific Facility Services.
He is survived by his wife, Clair Acob Calija; two sons, Christian Ferdz Acob Calija and Ron Janvis Acob Calija; daughter, Amerfil Grace Acob Calija; mother, Carmen Calija; brothers, Elmer Caliva of California and Reynaldo Caliva of Cebu City, Philippines; along with numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai with wake services to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

John Raymond Carvalho
John Raymond Carvalho of Lihue passed away in Wilcox Memorial Hospital on March 2, 2016, at the age of 59.
Preceded in death by parents, Salvador and Emily Carvalho.
John is survived by his wife, Lorene Carvalho of Hilo; two daughters, Tara Carvalho of Koloa, and Christie Lee Carvalho of Hilo; five grandchildren, Cyrus Carvalho-Sherman and Leisha-Lee Tanigawa of Hilo, Kysen Parongao, Makalea Parongao and Coco-Simone Kauakahi, all of Koloa; two brothers, Michael (Diana) Carvalho of Kauai, Salvador (Barbara) Carvalho Jr. of Oahu; numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Salt Pond Large Pavilion from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Carvalho family with arrangements.
Donato P. Parinas
Donato P. Parinas of Kekaha, passed away at the age of 78, on March 12, 2016, at home. Born on Sept. 7, 1937, in Langiden Abra, Philippines, he was a surveyor for Kekaha Sugar Plantation.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fernando and Antonia Parinas; nephew, John Eric Parinas and sister-in-law, Cathy Parinas.
Donato is survived by his wife, Marcelina Parinas of Kekaha; daughters, Evelyn (Shawn) Yadao of Hanapepe and Vangie (Mark Rapozo) Parinas of Kalaheo; grandchildren, Shawn Yadao Jr., Shawntel (Garrette Duarte) Yadao, Dylan Pimental, and Kristy Pimental; great-grandchildren, Tytus Pimental, and Gage Duarte; brothers, Puleriano (Conchita) Parinas of California, and Nestor (Avelina) Parinas of Eleele; sister, Rosalina Perona of Chicago and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Mass to follow at 10:30 a.m.

Yachiyo Zenigami Wataya
Yachiyo Zenigami Wataya of Kapaa, born on December 24, 1923, in Kilauea, passed away at home on March 17, 2016, at the age of 92.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Tsukasa “Duke” Wataya.
Yachiyo is survived by her son, Warren M. (Christine) Wataya; daughters, Doreen T. Wataya and Arlene S. (Kurt) Bosshard, all of Kapaa; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Masamu Zenigami and Takashi Zenigami of Pearl City; sister-in-law, Floris Wataya; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of her Life will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapaa. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. with services to follow at 3 p.m.
The family requests casual attire. Flowers and monetary offerings are kindly declined.
