LIHUE — Jim Jung said people should think about Hanamatsuri, translated to mean a Flower Festival, because their happiness and the happiness of others could depend on it.
Kauai’s annual Hanamatsuri celebration is scheduled 9:30 a.m. April 3 at the Kauai Soto Zen Temple in Hanapepe.
Bishop Eric Matsumoto of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, born and raised in Kona on the Big Island, will be the guest speaker.
Hanamatsuri celebrates the birth on the eighth day of the fourth month when Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism who later became enlightened as Shakyamuni Buddha, was born in Lumbini Garden, located in Nepal near the border of India.
Jung became a Buddhist about a year ago. He said Buddhism has helped him deal with his grief from the loss of his wife to cancer.
“Buddhism has taught me to understand and accept the transitory nature of life,” he said. “It has taught me that nothing is permanent.”
