Restrict rentals during big surf
Not all that long ago, before greed and tourism “rules” took over, no one would rent a visitor a surfboard, a boogie board, or a kayak in the winter when big, dangerous swells were the norm.
The big dangerous surf in the winter months are still with us. The visitors that were just rescued after their kayak capsized off the Napali Coast probably didn’t bring the kayak with them from California on checked baggage. And the county doesn’t want to do anything to slow down the tourist onslaught by charging for rescues.
So why not send a bill for the rescue to the company that rented these folks the kayaks?
Just a thought.

Saves lives, regulate and close Queen’s Bath
Well, here we go again, another tragic death at the Queen’s Bath and another family member returning home without their spouse by their side. (Likely the latest victim lured down to his death by the “Handy Dandy” guidebook).
As a concerned citizen and member of Emergency services I feel it’s long overdue for the county, Princeville Community Association, and whatever entities involved to regulate and close the trailhead down from October through March. This will help mitigate these ocean related incidents during the elevated surf months.
Unfortunately, the summer months can also be extremely dangerous with the presence of tradewind swells. The extrications and rescues at Queens bath are extremely difficult and risky for rescue personnel. Aside from the ocean rescues there are numerous amounts of traumatic incidents which include extremity fractures, head and spinal injuries, and lacerations to name a few.
With the driving force of the economy being the visitor industry we have an obligation to be the advocate for the safety and welfare of our visitors. How can we promote such a dangerous destination ?
How could these people be allowed to access that trail during the largest swell of the year? It’s unbelievable! It’s extremely negligent to promote this highly” overrated tide pool,” which is Queen’s Bath. It’s time to act!
How about it Mayor, County Council, Princeville Association? I applaud all efforts by Kauai Ocean Rescue Council, KFD rescue, Air1 personnel, and the County Lifeguards.
