KILAUEA — Department of Water officials announced the completion of the Kolo Road Main Replacement Project, in Kilauea, and held a dedication ceremony Tuesday on the grounds of Kilauea Elementary School.
“Whether a project is large or small, it always takes a lot of people to complete,” said Kirk Saiki, DOW’s manager and chief engineer, at the dedication.
The DOW received $1.3 million in state-funding for this project. The project replaced aging infrastructure in the Kilauea water system and helped to improve fire protection at Kilauea Elementary School. As a result, improving water flow has also helped Kilauea Elementary School to move forward with the renovation of their historic cafeteria.
“It’s perfect timing because not only will this project increase the water flow to our entire campus, but it will also allow us to proceed with renovating the old cafeteria,” said Kilauea Elementary School Principal Sherry Gonsalves. “So this offers many blessings for our school.”
The Kolo Road Main Replacement Project began in July 2015 and completed in February.
The construction contract was awarded to Earthworks Pacific Inc. and included the furnishing and materials for the installation of 1,181 linear feet of 12-inch ductile iron pipe, 58 linear feet of 8-inch ductile iron pipe and 54 linear feet of 6-inch ductile iron pipe.
It also included the installation of new valves, hydrants, service laterals, meter boxes, air valves, permanent cleanouts, valve boxes and connections to existing water lines.
The DOW conducted an 11-hour overnight water shutdown for all Kilauea residents from Dec. 17 to Dec. 18, to connect the new water main to the Kilauea water system. It was one of the largest scheduled water shutdowns the DOW has ever completed.
