HANALEI — Today is the deadline for comments on the feasibility study for a new Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge Valley Viewpoint that would offer parking, transit facilities, restrooms, a visitor contact information station, and access viewpoints for landscape and wildlife observation.
The five-acre site is a former tree farm and landscape nursery that sits on a high bluff, overlooking the Hanalei Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Hanalei River. It is located adjacent to Kuhio Highway and The Princeville Golf Course is located northeast of and across the highway from the site.
Working in conjunction with the County of Kauai, this site is intended to allow safe access for interpreting the National Wildlife Refuge System and endangered species management in Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge while helping alleviate traffic congestion on Kauai’s North Shore, according to a press release.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to acquire the site in order to provide welcome and orientation, interpretive, and educational opportunities related to the refuge’s management, wildlife, and cultural history.
The site will offer parking for support of the North Shore park-and-ride transit system and for personal vehicles, tour vans, and buses.
A multi-modal trail has also been proposed to connect the site to Princeville and the northern commercial areas.
