Brian Silva
Brian Silva passed away at Hale Kupuna on Jan. 26, 2016, at the age of 63. Born on Oct. 30, 1952, to Andrew and Norma “Silva” Vidinha, he was a heavy equipment operator with Kekaha Sugar and an umpire for various baseball and softball organizations throughout Kauai.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest G. Silva and Marian “Huddy” Silva.
Brian is survived by his son, Dustin (Jessica Tabije) Silva of Oahu; three grandchildren, Justin Josiah Silva, Danielle Silva, and Faith Silva, all of Oahu; twin brother, Burt (Ku’ulei) Vidinha of Kekaha; sisters, Erleen “Erla” Akana of Kekaha and Jayneen (BG) Laysa of Kalaheo and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, March 26, 2016, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. with services to follow at 11 a.m.
Casual attire is suggested and flowers are welcomed.

Zaeden Ray Pomaika’i’imaikalani Cadawas-Kaui
Zaeden Ray Pomaika’i’imaikalani Cadawas-Kaui of Kilauea passed away in Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital on Feb. 16, 2016, at the age of 8. He was born on Oahu on Oct. 23, 2007, and was a student at Kilauea Elementary School.
Preceded in death by maternal great-grandfather, Takayuki “Taxi” Kimura; maternal great-grandmother, IvaJean Gerardo; paternal great-grandparents, Wilfred and Itsue Kaui Sr. and Edwin “Ah Meng” and Clara Fu Sr.
Zaeden is survived by his parents, Wilfred “Bradda” Kaui III and Shauntie Cadawas; sisters, Zalyah and Aveah Cadawas-Kaui, (big sister) Taelee Kimura; maternal great-grandmother, Sally Kimura; maternal grandparents, Lori and Alan Cadawas; paternal grandparents, Wilfred (Cynthia) Kaui Jr and Edleen Kaui; uncles and aunties, Clifton (Desteny) Cadawas, Jacque (Dwyle) Kaui-Lee, Melanie (Cary) Mitchell, Jeffrey (Emily) Kaui, numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.
A celebration of Zaedens’ life will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at St. Sylvester Catholic Church with viewing from 9 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be followed at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Mercedes Kealohalimaloa ‘Mercy’ Ching
Mercedes Kealohalimaloa “Mercy” Ching of Hanapepe passed away at Kauai Veteran’s Memorial Veteran’s Hospital on Feb. 22, 2016, at the age of 90. Born on Nov. 14, 1925, in Hanapepe, Kauai she was a cafeteria worker at Eleele School for the Department of Hawaii.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William K. C. Ching, Sr.; and son, William K. C. Ching, Jr.
Mercy is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn “Nani” (Gerald) Hill of Hanapepe; four grandchildren, Cameo Pualani Hill of Phoenix, Arizona, Michael Kamahiai of Phoenix, Arizona, Kapiolani Nisha Ching of Honolulu and Josiah Kawohikukahi Ching of Ellensburg, Washington; one great-grandchild, London Elizabeth Mililani Hill of Phoenix, Arizona; brothers, Clarence (Lillian) Kaohi of Eleele and Ronald (Marge) Kaohi of Honolulu; sisters, Betty Kaleohano of Hanapepe and Arlene Naholoholo of California; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with services at 10:30 a.m with burial to follow at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Cemetery.

James ‘Tony’ Anthony Divan
James “Tony” Anthony Divan of Kapaa passed away at home on Feb. 21, 2016, at the age of 61. He was born in Illinois on Sept. 12, 1954, and was employed by Dorvin D Leis Company.
Preceded in death by his father, Norman Divan and sister, Joanna Hawkins.
Tony is survived by his wife, Patricia Divan of Kapaa; daughter, Heather (Darrin) Pelszynski of Florida; son, Cody (Lashiya) Divan of Kapaa; mother, Emmy Patterson of Kapaa; three grandchildren, Mersadeez Barrett, Conner Pelszynski, Vaitea Divan; brother, Mark (Valerie) Divan of Kapaa; nephew, Jacob (Maria) Divan; sisters, Cathy (Steve) McIntosh and Cindy (Michael) Guthrie, both of Illinois; numerous other family and friends.
A memorial service for Tony will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Kapaa with visitation from 1:30 p.m. and services will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Rosalina ‘Sally’ Decker
Rosalina “Sally” Decker, of Bactac, Philippines, died on Feb. 22, 2016, at her home at the age of 82.
She was born on Sept. 3, 1933, and was a nurse aide with Nurse Finders at Wilcox Hospital.
She is preceded in death by Anastacia Pangdan, Mariano Layaoen Pangdam and Kaumakani Kalama-Ventar.
She is survived by her husband Wesley Decker of Hanamaulu, son, Daniel (Kristen) Decker of Kapaa, daughter, Laura Goo of Arizona, seven grandchildren: Serenity Kalama, Kayla-Anne Goo, Kegan Goo, Dynielle Decker, Dreyden Decker, Preston Decker and Kevin Fisher, two brothers: Benito (Cresing) Pangdan of Kilauea and Samuel (Aida) Pangdan of Kilauea and two sisters: Lucia (Marcelino) Tabuli of Kilauea and Noemi (Arlene) Illastron of Kalaheo.
A celebration of life will be held on March 5, 2016, with visitation from 9 a.m., until 10 a.m., and services to follow from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lihue Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the church.
The family requests casual/aloha attire and flowers are welcome.
William ‘Teru’ Teruo Sakai
William “Teru” Teruo Sakai of Kalaheo passed away at home on Feb. 25, 2016, at the age of 83. He was born in Port Allen on March 28, 1932, a Veteran of the United States Army, he retired as a Security Guard with Department of Defense stationed at Kokee, Kauai.
Preceded in death by his parents, Tomita and Matsuko Sakai; brother, Douglas Sakai and granddaughter, Deeanne Falls.
William is survived by his wife, Myra “Linda” Sakai of Kalaheo; two daughters, Debbie (Manuel) Sakai Ortiz-Luis of Suisun, California, Amy (Greg) Rita of Kalaheo; one son, William (Samantha) Sakai Jr. of Kalaheo; four grandchildren, Raquel Rita, Garrett Rita, Sasha Sakai, Kaimana Sakai; brother, James (Sarah) Sakai of Kalaheo; niece, Suzi Sakai; nephews, Isaac Dumlao and Timothy Urquhart and numerous cousins.
A celebration of Williams life will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Kauai Veterans Cemetery Pavilion with visitation from 10:30 a.m. and services celebrated at 11 a.m. Inurnment to follow.

Herminigilda Dagracia Perono
Herminigilda Dagracia Perono of Kapaa passed away at home on Feb. 17, 2016, at the age of 85. She was born in Paniqui, Tarlac, Philippines on April 11, 1930, and was a dedicated homemaker.
Preceded in death by her husband, Crispin Perono Sr.
Herminigilda is survived by five sons, Florentino (Delia) Perono Sr. of Germany and their two children, Rosemarie and Florentino Jr., Crispin (Pacita) Perono of Spain and their children, Jeanette and Myra, Cesar (Jackie) Perono of Kauai, Celerino (Mary Jane) Perono Sr. and their children, Russel, Jancelene, Celerino Jr. Joshua and Crispin James, Apollo (Florida) Perono Sr. of Kauai and their children, John Paul, Apollo Jr and Mary Rose; five daughters, Criselda (Russell) Yotsuda of Kauai and their children, Marie Grace, Sheryll and Christine, Clarissa (Wilfredo) Urbien of Kauai and their daughter, Clariefel, Chita Mary Ann Perono of Kauai and her daughter, Kris Cynthalynn, Anabelle (Edgar Sr.) Trance of Kauai and their children, Kristoffer Cris, Edgar Jr. and Jasper Cris, Fredes (Ronnie Sr.) Rapiza of Kauai and their children, Frenielda, Ronalene, Ronnie Jr., Raffy and Rocky; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; sisters, Josefina, Honarata and Elizabeth.
A celebration of Herminigilda’s life will be held on March 12, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Herminigilda will be buried in the Philippines at Santa Maria Cemetery.

William A. Woods
William “Bill” A. Woods was 78 when he passed away peacefully at home Feb. 24, 2016. He was born in Battle Creek, MI. He was pre-deceased by his father Roy Harris Woods, and his mother Virginia Gorham Woods. He is survived by his artist-wife, Roberta Jean Griffith; two daughters, Lisa (Woods) Epp; husband, Ken Epp of San Jose, CA; two children, Stephanie and Michael Boehnker, Tracey Woods, and her son, Jacob Gulley of Mesa, AZ; also by his sister Lory (Woods) Jenkins of Columbus, OH, and his brother Tom Woods and his wife Sandra, of Battle Creek, MI.
Roberta Griffith and William “Bill” Woods grew up in the same neighborhood in Battle Creek, then went separate ways after graduating from Battle Creek Central in the Class of 1955. After 46 years without communicating with one another, they re-connected, got married and Roberta retired from college teaching and moved to Hawaii. As soon as William “Bill” graduated from highschool, he enlisted in the US Navy. After a short period of journalism training, he was assigned to the USS Iowa, the last American battleship in the Atlantic, with the rank of Journalist 3rd Class. He wrote for the Navy Times until he was honorably discharged in 1959.
William (Bill) attended Michigan State University from 1959-60, when he then moved to Kalamazoo, MI where he opened the Side Door, a popular coffee shop for two colleges in the alcohol-free town. Musicians such as Peter, Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, and a number of other well-known musicians performed there. Not only was William “Bill” a talented cartoonist, but also an amazing musician. He would accompany the performers at his coffee shop by playing the stand-up bass behind them. He also played bass for the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. In 1963 William “Bill” traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark, for a year to live and work at Dansk Porcelain where he learned how to work with porcelain. As he learned Danish, he became a translator of purchase orders from English to Danish for the company. In 1964 he returned to the USA and settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Among the jobs he held in New Mexico were as owner of Racket and Slats tennis and ski shop, for a rubber stamp company, as a political cartoonist for the Silver City Daily newspaper, as well as with Ed Black Chevrolet for a year. Around 1980 he became a loan officer at the First National Bank in Albuquerque.
After about 10 years at the bank, William “Bill” took early retirement in 1990 when he was 52, and moved to Princeville, Hawaii, a place he had grown to love during several vacations, and was employed by Lelan Nishek of Kauai Nursery and Landscaping. William “Bill” and his crew of 20 landscaped the Princeville Hotel grounds twice and the Hyatt grounds in Poipu once. After that, he assumed responsibilities for a number of home landscape accounts for Kauai Nursery on the North Shore for ten years. For five of those years, his daughter Lisa and her two children lived with him while she worked alongside him landscaping. William “Bill” was well liked by his landscape clients because he was reliable and did outstanding work for them.
During his 26 years as a resident of Princeville, William “Bill” enjoyed the company of many, many great friends. He truly looked forward to Friday nights of Hawaiian music at Hanalei Bay Resort, where he always sat at the corner of the bar for many years. In fact, William “Bill” and Roberta were married at HBR in 2006. Throughout his life William “Bill” was an avid reader. In his younger years, he loved snow skiing, tennis and fishing. After moving to Kauai’s North Shore, he generally fished at Anini Beach and below the Pali Ke Kua Resort in Princeville. As a fisherman he practiced catch and release. He enjoyed riding motorcycles for many years and was especially attached to his black 2003 Harley-Davidson FLSTC/I-ANV Heritage Softail Classic Anniversary model. One of the highlights of his life occurred a few summers ago when William “Bill” was invited to play the stand-up bass for six hours with the Beach Boys as they celebrated Brian Williams’ 50th birthday on the beach in Hanalei.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Kauai Hospice or a charity of your choice.
Sensuke Ueunten
Dr. Sensuke Ueunten of Kalaheo passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Feb. 27, 2016, at age 95. He was born in Lawai to the late Senfu and Kama Ueunten on January 20, 1921. He is survived by sons Paul (Bobbie) of San Jose,California, David (Lei) of Honolulu, Gary (Glenna) of Lawai, Wesley (Julie) of El Cerrito, California; eight grandchildren: JJ, Kyle, Brett, Amy, Trent, Christina, Teresa, and Lyle; siblings, Yoshiko Orlando, Senmatsu, Thomas, Stanley, George, Marvin. He was preceded in death by wife, Chiyo, siblings Tsuruko Landon, Senji, Senki, Sentei, Senmei, and Isamu.
Sensuke graduated from Kalaheo School 1935, Kauai High School 1939, Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago in 1950. He worked as a dentist in Kalaheo for almost 50 years and served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Family requests no flowers or koden. Private services to be held.
Bevery ‘Bev’ Phillips
Bevery “Bev” Phillips (Yaris) died unexpectedly on Oahu, on Saturday, Feb. 19 2016, at the age of 62.
Bev is survived by her husband, Robert “Bobby” Phillips of Kapaa; two daughters, Deserie Phillips of Kapaa, Chante Anguay (Kaleo) of Waianae; mother, Alice Canales of Puhi; two sisters, Waedeen Canales of Kaneohe, Rodreen Canales Boyd of California; three brothers, Salvador “Junior” Yaris jr of Maui, Rodney Canales of Maui and Randy Canales of California; as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins, aunt and uncles.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 11 a.m., at Kalapaki Beach Park. All are welcomed to attend and celebrate the life of Beverly Phillips. Casual attire.
