POIPU — Prince Jonah Kuhio rose to the highest level in government and saw the importance of perpetuating the Hawaiian government in American government, said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., Saturday at the Prince Kuhio Day commemorative service at the Prince Kuhio Birthplace and Cultural Preserve.
“We, as the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Chapter 3 ‘Kaumuali‘i’ have an obligation to do this,” said Warren Perry, the event’s emcee. “Prince Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole Pi‘ikoi restored the Royal Order of Kamehameha, and we are caretakers of his Birthplace and Cultural Preserve after being deeded the area in 1924.”
Kaulana Finn, representing Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, said Prince Kuhio is the first who brought the aloha spirit to Washington, and it is important for all leaders to look in the mirror and face the challenge of not dividing people, but having people come together. The future and welfare of the Hawaiian people is at stake.
March 26 is observed as Kuhio Day in Hawaii, a state holiday which was established in 1949 and marks the birth of Prince Jonah Kuhio, also known as the “Citizen Prince.”
