LIHUE — Andrea Leung said the quilt by Lea Ingram goes perfectly with the “Nene Crossing” sign she has at her home in Vermont.
“I brought the ‘Nene Crossing’ sign home from here for my home in Vermont,” Leung said after purchasing the Ingram quilt at the Kauai Quilt Show, set up at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center. “I also brought a ‘Moose Crossing’ sign for my house in Wailua. The quilt will go home to Vermont where it goes perfect with the ‘Nene Crossing’ sign.”
Catie Burns of Nene Quilters, one of the Kauai Quilt Show presenters, said there are a lot more quilts available for sale.
“We’ve made several good sales of quilts,” Burns said. “But there are many more available. Once a quilt is sold, it gets replaced with a new one from the back.”
Karen Cox’s “Paradise Awaits” is another quilt that sold already.
Cox’s quilt was judged a blue ribbon winner in the Machine Quilting Category sponsored by Vicky’s Fabrics. Paradise Awaits was followed by Erla Bukoski’s “P,” and Mary Ching’s “Floating Around” in the judging performed by representatives of Vicky’s Fabrics.
“Salute Our Troops,” a quilt by Theresa Murray, is catching the eyes of many quilt admirers as well as the judges in the Machine Embroidery category sponsored by Discount Fabric Warehouse in Lihue.
Murray’s quilt is followed by Jodi Hartman’s “Hawaiiana,” and Jenn Schwichtenberg’s “2015 Kauai Pineapple.”
Jeni Hardy’s “Kapaia Woodland Lei” topped the Handwork category judging sponsored by Kapaia Stitchery. Her piece was followed by Sandi Bidewell’s “Mini Baltimore,” and Joanne Watson’s “Lei Awapuhi.”
“We have the People’s Choice judging going on during the show which ends on March 29,” said Carmen Yasis. “People can come in and vote on their favorite. We won’t know who wins that award until the show ends.”
More than 60 quilts by Kauai residents are on display, many of which are available for sale, during the show which is sponsored by the Kauai Quilt Guilt, Nene Quilters, Vicky’s Fabrics, Discount Fabric Warehouse and Kapaia Stitchery.
While viewing the award winners, people may also shop through the designated donation quilts. Proceeds from the sale of those quilts go directly to a Kauai nonprofit organization.
“We also have chances for the ‘Opportunity Quilt,’” said Judy Teeple. “This is a quilt which is made up of quilt squares from all over. People who visited the show two years ago were given squares to work on, and after receiving the completed squares back, this is the result.”
Viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays through Fridays. Friday hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no admission to view the quilts.
