LIHUE — Just in time for American Red Cross Month in March, about a dozen people have signed up to be volunteers with the Kauai County Red Cross Chapter.
“We’ve had some serious inquiries,” said Padraic Gallagher, Kauai County Red Cross director. “We created a lot of buzz.”
Gallagher said he has even had some interest from former volunteers who wanted to return. The Kauai chapter is on a campaign to add at least 30 volunteers to the 72 in place.
For the month of March, across the nation, the American Red Cross recognizes its every day heroes during Red Cross Month.
“Hawaii has no shortage of every day heroes,” said Coralie Chun Matayoshi, Hawaii Red Cross CEO. “They are selfless Red Cross volunteers and supporters who embody the spirit of humanitarianism and bring hope to those in need.”
The Red Cross is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and responds to home fires and other disasters in Hawaii every four days, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities.
The Hawaii Red Cross also educates local youth, organizations and businesses on how to prepare before disasters strike.
In fiscal year 2015, the Hawaii Red Cross responded to 85 local emergencies, assisted 1,813 military families and trained 12,262 people in lifesaving skills.
