The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park are coordinating a major beach cleanup starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Work efforts center around clearing the debris resulting from the heavy rains which pelted the island last Thursday night. Runoff from the rain brought down a deluge of vegetative debris, which caused one of the Smith’s Boat barges to be damaged and littered the Wailua Marina as well as overflowing into the popular swimming ponds at Lydgate Park.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Lydgate Park swimming ponds.
“About 50 or more volunteers would be ideal to clear the beach of driftwood by 10:30 a.m.,” said Tommy Noyes, general coordinator for The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park. “Participation by community service groups would be a tremendous help to this effort.”
Volunteers helping on the beach are asked to wear shoes, bring their own water bottle and work gloves, and use sun protection.
“Anyone who would like to support the effort, but prefer not to clear driftwood from the beach is invited to bring wholesome treats for the volunteers,” Noyes said.
Organizations who are planning to help are asked to text or call Noyes at 639-1018.
