Letter had no facts to back up charges
The charges printed in a recent letter to the editor (TGI March 7) about myself and the County Council regarding “secret” meetings are unfounded and untrue, and it is unfortunate that TGI printed these charges when there are absolutely no specifics provided in the letter.
It is particularly offensive that charges against me would be extended to my colleagues on the council with absolutely no basis of fact.
The letter cites state law that “the formation and conduct of public policythe discussions, decisions and actions of g overnmental agencies shall be conducted as openly as possible.” (emphasis added). But the letter provides no evidence that a governmental agencyi.e., the county council or a subset thereofhas been involved in any meetings improperly closed to the public.
It is unfortunate that we all (readers; TGI; councilmembers) have to spend our time chasing vague charges with no basis of fact. It would be a much better use of our time to engage in lively, but respectful, discussion of issues that matter greatly to our families and our future.

Saying no to more taxation
The Kauai County proposal to raise the GET a half percent is taxation without representation. I vote no on this proposal, just so they may know. Premise projects that the money is to be spent on for public transportation must be presented.
There is no accountability for this kind of pie-in-the-sky taxation. I want the roads and traffic flow dealt with, not bike paths, taxis or buses. Those are projects to be dealt with after we may drive with a minimum of delay for residents driving by car from one place to another on this island, especially when having to cross through Kapaa.
Studies indicated that residents are not giving up their cars. Why should we, we live here. County Council must find a way to obtain the money for road repair and traffic flow modifications from the general budget, from the folks who drive, such as a surcharge on a third family car, as well as on those heavy trucks that do so much damage to asphalt roads.
In addition, a surcharge on rental cars would be helpful. Vacation rentals, as well as a moratorium on building, hotel and condo permits until the driving conditions are dealt with in a responsible manner must be put into place. Furthermore, I’ve heard discussion that the state wants to raise the GET a half percent. I am opposed to that as well. Wouldn’t that make a full 1 percent increase when added together?
Honestly, the lack of specific project proposals with costs and lack of accountability across the board boggle my mind. Put a county manager on the ballot with the expertise to deal with our financial issues and budget shortfalls. In conclusion, no taxation without representation or accountability, and let non-residents, rented cars, as well as trucks help pay for the damage they cause to our roads.
