The Kalaheo Elementary School cafeteria will be transformed into the underwater kingdom of Ariel, the Little Mermaid, starting at 7 tonight.
The Kalaheo School Drama Club presents its program of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid,” with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman Slater, from the book by Doug Wright.
“This is really fun,” said Natalie Lett, a Kalaheo School student who portrays Ursula the Sea Witch. “You get to be mean without the consequences. I don’t get to be Ursula all the time, though.”
There will also be food concessions, prize drawings, and a silent auction.
Marly Madayag is behind the current presentation which continues May 6, and May 7.
“The kids, Ms. Madayag, parents, drama alumni, and a lot of others in the community volunteer so many hours to make this a fabulous performance,” said Cheryl Bechard, a Kalaheo School Drama Club parent. “We aren’t trying to make a ton of money with our ticket sales. We want everyone to be able to afford to come. Ms. Madayag puts on a top notch show, and once a person comes once, I think they will want to come back, year after year.”
Student Charles O’Neill portrays Prince Eric in the production.
“It’s a lot of work, but at the end, it’s really fun,” O’Neill said. “The hardest part I have as Prince Eric is falling off the ship.”
Lett is a three-year veteran of the Kalaheo Drama Club stage.
“The hardest part of doing this, and the other productions, is messing up, like missing a line or something, and then getting back in the zone,” she said.
The show starts at 7 p.m. each night.
The club’s presentation is done through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
