LIHUE — Allan A. Smith, a former chairman of the board of directors of Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the cooperative’s board.
Smith, who was first elected to the board in 2007, stepped down in 2014 when he was hired as infrastructure manager of Syngenta Hawaii’s operation in Kekaha.
A longtime agricultural and business leader on Kauai, Smith said he now has the flexibility to balance his work with his obligation to KIUC.
Under the cooperative’s bylaws, vacancies for unexpired terms on the nine-member board are filled by an appointment by the remaining directors. The board has frequently chosen former board members to fill positions because they have completed the education and certification required by the co-op.
In addition to appointing Smith, the board voted to appoint incumbent director Teofilo “Phil” Tacbian to fill the unexpired term of Karen Baldwin, who resigned from the board last week.
Tacbian’s term will now expire in 2018, and Smith’s term will expire in 2017.
