Waimea High School’s boys tennis teams edged out Kapaa High School, 3-2, Monday afternoon at the Waimea High School tennis courts.
On the girls’ courts, Kapaa shut down the Menehune, 5-0, following completion of matches which were called Saturday following bouts of rain.
“After getting rained on twice at Waimea and Hanapepe, we finally completed the matches at the Waimea courts in near-perfect weather,” said Waimea coach Adrian Alvarez. “Following a tough and hard-fought season, I’m proud to announce the Waimea Menehune boys are the 2016 Kauai Interscholastic Federation champions with a 5-1 record. The Menehune girls did great, coming in third place with a 3-3 record.”
Marcus Pereira, the Menehune’s No. 1 boys singles player, took three sets to get past Kapaa’s Bear Zeitz, 6-1, 1-6, and 6-4, while Waimea’s Patrick Cowell waged his own three-set battle on the boys second singles court against Kapaa’s John Uribe. Cowell prevailed, 5-7, 6-4 and 6-4.
The Menehune boys clinched the match on the boys second doubles court when Waimea’s Edmelle Medina paired with senior Riley Saiki to defeat the Kapaa duo of Braedon Andrews and Brandon Quilos, 6-4, 6-4.
Waimea suffered its losses on the boys first doubles court when Joshua Subiate, pairing with Limar Medina, dropped to Kapaa’s Jake De Peralta and Shawn Yamane in three sets, 1-6, 6-2, 1-6.
On the boys third doubles, Waimea’s duo of Keegan Donaher and Marc Serapio came up short against Kapaa’s Mason Buick and Makani Crowder, 5-7, 5-7.
Kapaa prevailed on the girls court when Waimea’s Kari Correa dropped to Bella Kotsol in three sets 2-6, 6-1, 4-6 on the first singles court, and Menehune Karla Bermudez dropped to Deidre Andaya, 3-6, 4-6 on the girls second singles pavement.
Kapaa also controlled the girls doubles when Waimea’s pair of Khryshia Pascual and Ashley Pascual dropped to Shannon Sitzler and Britney Uribe, 1-6, 1-6 on the first doubles court.
Kylah Gruspe and Julia Hirano, in Menehune blue, fared no better on the girls second doubles arena, dropping a tight match to Kapaa’s Chiara Fumagali and Sydney Nice, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6(7-2), and 3-6.
Kapaa rounded out its sweep of the girls’ matches when Lila Hearn and Kailee Bush combined for a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Waimea duo of Rochelle Dela Cruz and Hope Coyaso.
The Menehune next open the KIF state qualifying matches Thursday morning when the boys take the courts starting at 8 a.m. and the girls meet at the Kauai Community College tennis courts, also starting at 8 a.m. The finals for the qualifying matches are scheduled for Friday at the Kauai Community College courts.
