LIHUE — Megan Nii, director of the Wilcox Elementary School Creative Arts Program, joked Monday that perhaps Oprah Winfrey will hear of their program and help with getting a covered dance studio.
“We break up the nearly 70 students into different groups,” Nii said during rehearsal for the spring finale. “One third go to ukulele practice in the school’s cafeteria, one third stay in the portable classroom, and the other third do dance practice out here on the school lawn. Maybe Oprah will hear about us and give us a covered dance studio so the kids aren’t exposed to the weather.”
The Creative Arts Program was going through rehearsal for its spring finale, which will be held May 6 at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
This free, family-friendly event is open to the public, said Yvette Sahut, whose son is part of the 70-member ensemble.
Doors and food booths open at 6:15 p.m. with the show starting at 7. The program will feature dance, song, and live skits performed by the students in the Creative Arts Program.
The Wilcox Elementary School Creative Arts Program is a free, after-school program for students in third- through fifth-grades.
“This is entirely volunteer-based and run by the teachers of the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School,” Sahut said.
The core focus of the Creative Arts Program is for students to gain appreciation of the arts through drama, music and dance. Students in the program perform at assemblies, and have been invited to other schools to perform. They also participate in nonprofit events around the island.
