LIHUE — Desserts like cascarones and concanons are popular dishes at the Filipino Cultural Festival and Dessert Contest.
Hundreds of people are expected to the Kauai Museum today to take part in the annual Filipino Cultural Festival and Dessert Contest, said Lyah Kama-Drake, education and event coordinator for the Kauai Museum.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Kauai residents and visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the music, food, dancing and storytelling of the Filipino culture.
The festivities are free to Kauai residents. The museum is charging general admission — $15 — for visitors.
In addition to music and dancing, a dessert contest, featuring the contestants’ best Filipino dessert, will take place.
“We’re hopeful to have a variety of dishes that day,” Kama-Drake said. “Cascarone and concanon are favored.”
Entries are judged by taste, texture and appearance.
By the end of the festival, Kama-Drake hopes people will have a deeper understanding of Filipino heritage.
“The museum is devoted to creating appropriate exhibits, the publication and educational programs which serve the indigenous and immigrant peoples and the general public,” she said.
