NUKOLII — Angelica Luna, a senior at Waimea High School, believes she can help people help each other through her pursuit of a business degree in college.
“I like to solve problems,” Luna said. “I would like to pursue study in business — any kind of business — to help solve problems, especially big problems, that are in business. If you can solve these problems, businesses can help each other, and ultimately, other people.”
Luna was one of eight recipients of the Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce scholarships which were distributed Tuesday evening during the Filipino Chamber’s Second Quarter Meeting at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort attended by several hundred people, including the scholarship recipients and their parents.
Scholarships were presented to two Waimea High School seniors, three Kauai High School seniors, two students at Kauai Community College, and a Kapaa High School senior — Nicki Domingo.
Domingo said she plans to study nursing at the Kauai Community College, and perhaps transfer to a four-year college or university on Oahu to further her study.
She was pleased to discover that Jobyna Tumbaga of Kekaha, another scholarship recipient, is going to graduate in nursing from the Kauai Community College and will be pursuing her bachelor’s degree through the distance learning program at the college.
Luna also plans her first step towards a business degree at the Kauai Community College, devoting her first two years to studying Liberal Arts.
Lauren Lagoc, a Waimea High School senior, said she plans on attending Washington State University to study athletic training.
“I’m recovering from ACL surgery,” Lagoc said. “I know I should have done the operation sooner, but I’m spending this quiet time to recover. This injury is what prompted me to study athletic training.”
William John Balbin is the second Kauai Community College student receiving a scholarship. He is currently studying business and on course to graduate following the fall semester.
“I’m studying business so I can learn how to run businesses more successfully,” Balbin said. “Ultimately, I want businesses to succeed so they can help community nonprofits, or youth ministries, to succeed.”
Ian Brysen Pagatpatan, a Kauai High School senior, has set his sights for Oregon State University where he will pursue a degree in electrical engineering.
Nicole Masulit is also scheduled to graduate from Kauai High School. She plans on attending Pacific University for a degree in computer science after discovering she likes working with computers and software.
“I took a class in programming at school,” Masulit said. “That’s when I discovered that I liked working with computers. I’m going to try for a degree in computer science and see how far it will take me.”
Kaelee Esposo, a Kauai High School senior, rounds out the scholarship recipients selected after review from the Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Committee which includes Bobby and Cyndi Ayonon, Dr. Addison Bulosan, Juno Apalla, and Vonn Ramos.
Funds for the scholarships are derived from various fundraising activities hosted by the Kauai Filipino Chamber of Commerce, including the major scholarship golf tournament which will contest on Labor Day, Sept. 5.
