NAWILILWILI — Thirty-four seconds separated the first yacht, Bonjolea II, and the second finishing yacht, OZone, Thursday during the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Rum Series, Race No. 2 at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
Bonjolea II, a Sydney 36, tripped the finish horn on an elapsed sail of 1 hour, 7 minutes and 2 seconds on the 5.80-mile course under 5 to 7 knot winds blowing out of the northeast. She was chased by OZone who took advantage of the perfect conditions for long spinnaker runs who crossed at 1:07:36, but corrected to 1:07:42 PHRF for top honors in the second race of the six-race series.
Bonjolea II corrected to 1:11:25 PHRF for third place, being bumped by Papaau who beat the adjustment with its third overall crossing at 1:12:09 and corrected to 1:09:04 PHRF for second place.
Fast Company, an Olson 30 who recently earned the rights to represent the NYC at the Lipton Cup on Oahu by top scores among contending boats, finished in fourth place, posting a 1:11:57 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:12:03 PHRF.
Other finishers in the eight-boat fleet saw Speedy (1:13:37 elapsed, 1:13:43 PHRF) correct to 1:04:39 Club for top honors in that class.
Weatherly (1:16:46 elapsed, 1:16:53 PHRF), Trinity (1:12:58 elapsed, 1:23:03 PHRF), and Coyote (1:37:00 elapsed, 1:30:57 PHRF) rounded out the fleet.
The public is invited to join the NYC Race Committee and watch the Rum Series, Race No. 3 take place, Thursday when the first flags fly at 5 p.m.
