LIHUE — Four sex assaults, two deaths and one missing person was reported in Kauai for the month of March, according to the Kauai Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau.
Although KPD won’t comment on ongoing investigations, it must provide its reports to the police commission, which holds its meetings once a month.
In its report, ISB investigated a sex assault case at a Kauai church school where a male student had reported to school officials that he had been sexually assaulted by a staff member in January 2015.
During the school’s internal investigation, the staff member was identified and terminated. KPD told the school that it should have told the police back in 2015, not in March 2016. Police have interviewed the student and are investigating the incident, according to ISB’s report.
Another case ISB reported was a walk-in sex assault where a father believed his daughter was being sexually assaulted. After more digging, ISB believed that the alleged sex assault may have been consensual. Her family sent her to Oahu and KPD will interview her upon her return, the report showed.
Another walk-in case was reported at KPD’s headquarters where a woman said she was sexually assaulted at Polihale State Park. The case was referred to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
Police arrested a man for second-degree sex assault after he allegedly assaulted a woman who had just got into a fight with her husband and walked out on him.
Two deaths, with no sign of foul play, were also reported.
One took place in Hanamaulu. A plate with a “white powdery substance, believed to be cocaine” was found near the dead man’s body. After an autopsy was performed, the forensic pathologist ruled the cause of death as a stroke, possibly caused by cocaine, but it’s not known until the toxicology comes back, the report showed.
The second death took place in Kilauea. The cause of death was revealed as a heart attack. ISB said the man who died had more than 300 firearms registered to his name, but found only 30 in his home. When detectives contacted his son, the son was able to account for the 270 firearms.
Detectives also investigated a call for a missing elderly man in the Koloa/Poipu area. His wife contacted KPD, stating that the man had gone bicycling earlier in the day and had not been home for nearly 24 hours.
He had not returned her calls, but detectives were able to track the man’s phone to Omao. He was eventually located. He had sustained minor lacerations to his legs. He was treated and released to his sister’s house.
In total, ISB investigated 145 cases and made 12 felony arrests and one misdemeanor arrest for the month of March.
